I am your familiar for now
A downloadable Quest
I am your familiar for now.
Print out and cut out your new familiar. Give them a name and an aspirational destination. Now they're your problem.
Keep your familiar safe and with you at all times until you can deliver them to their destination. Until then, they can keep you company and be a welcomed companion on your quest.
"When you finally bring me to my destination, take a photo to remember the partnership we had. I will miss you."

I love this idea! It helps if you print it small rather than large since it'll maintain a solid shape more easily. Also, what do we do after we've reached our destination? Can we burn it to release its spirit? or can we turn it into a paper bead? Any ideas?
Yes. The recommended printing size is the standard business card size.
Please do not burn your familiar. This causes them pain and distress.
The recommended procedure is to place your familiar on a large rock or similarly raised surface and tell it how you'll never forget it's companionship but it's time you part ways as they are home now. Following that, turn and walk away slowly as tears well up in your eyes. Do not be alarmed if this is accompanied by an orchestral swell and visual montage of your time together.
The final step is to never forget your friend.
Lmao thank you! I'll keep that in mind. I'll be sure to bring orchestral music with me
really interesting idea but something I'm asking myself is weather a familiar's destination be a goal instead of a place
A goal is a place inside your life. So yes.
He's all packed and ready to go on another adventure in three days. Probably just going to keep taking him to his destination for as long as I want to return to the country. So again, very happy with this idea as it makes me very happy to pack my little friend in my carry-on. :)
Safe journeys for you and your familiar, friend.
Tomorrow, I was supposed to be going to Germany. The trip was canceled due to pandemic. So as a bit of self-care, one of these little buddies is now on my desk and labeled to eventually be headed for Germany. So thanks for the smol pick-me-up. <3
I hope they find their way home with you some day, friend.
Looks like my reply didn't go through, but I made it! Yesterday my plane landed back home in the USA after spending a month in Prague and a glorious week and a half in Germany. :) Me and my little friend came home safe and sound and hopefully he'll get to go back with me again in 5 months.
I'm so glad your familiar finally made their trip. (and you too, of course)
This is so wholesome! Will take my familiar with me today on my solo lockdown-walk outside. :)
Another pretty cool business card RPG in a similar vein, where you have to get something (flowers) to somewhere(/someone) is Bouquet by rocketorca.
Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out.
By the way - I know this is possibly too much to ask for considering you're giving your design away for free, but I noticed that the familiars are scaled to 3.5"x2" (aspect ratio 1.75) business cards, which are the standard in the US.
It's fine as long as I print them on my printer centered and all but I was about to order a batch from a professional printer and noticed that in most of the EU (+ UK) the default size seems to be 85mm x 55mm (aspect ratio 1.5454...).
So, the question is: Is there a possibility you could create a non-imperial version in 85mm x 55mm? :3
I could resize it through rasterization but that would stretch out the text OR I could recreate the little fellows in PowerPoint or something (retaining attribution of course!) but that would probably take longer for me than for you.
P.S. I realize I might be opening a can of worms here. There are many countries following a 90mm x 55mm or 90mm x 50mm standard. ;)
Sure, let me see what I can do. I'll get back to you soon.
i've updated the 9up file to have a 2nd page with the 85mm x 55mm versions. I hope that works out for you!
Thank you so much! Lovin' it!
Update: 500 of the critters are on the way now. ^^
Will hand them out to friends and colleagues as well.
500! Wow! Thanks for spreading these around! I'm terrible at self promotion so I really do appreciate this.
I'm in love with this idea, but I'd feel so sad at leaving my friend behind once we reach their destination. I'd be too tempted to bring them home with me. It's absolutely amazing to me that you've managed to stirr such intense emotions in me with just a picture and a few lines of text.
There's some secret hacks: Set your familiars destination to something ambiguous, that way you can never be sure if it's the right place to leave them. Or their destination could be part of a set like "Every pub in town" to extend your quest.
Thank you for your kind words.
this is so cute! my new familiar will keep me company until i can bring them to their destination (my new workplace) - it's nice to have a companion in uncertain times.
Cleaver hack to keep them at your new workplace! Also congrats on the new gig!
I love this! I've been thinking a lot about ritual games involving inanimate objects, and folding the tiny business card format into a little creature with its instructions on it is creative!
Aw shucks, thank you very much!
This. Is. ADORABLE! Also, do I have to leave my familiar at the destination? That makes me sad! :<
I was going to do something like this for my own game, and you’ve shown that it’s possible and awesome. :D
Thanks for making such a cute little thing <3
That's between you and your familiar. (I'd prefer if you don't litter so maybe you ought to bring the critter back)
Oh, I’m glad! I’ll be sure to bring them back for another adventure after reaching their destination. :)
